What Kind of Door Locks do I require?
There are two basic types of locks available:
These door locks are available in a wide variety of finishes ranging from polished
brass to satin chrome or antique nickel. When buying door locks especially for
the external or main doors purchase door locks that offer key control. Many
manufacturers now offer architectural quality door locks using keys that cannot
be copied except by certain locksmiths or only by the manufacturer themselves.
Nevertheless, when shopping for a door lock, be sure to consider the following:
Rim Locks
A Rim door lock can be fitted onto solid timber doors or
glass panelled doors. The locking mechanism on these door locks come in options
of deadlocking nightlatch, deadbolt, rollerbolt or a simple latch mechanism.
Rim locks can be operated by way of a handle or a knob as described below in
detail.
Security
Door lock/ Night Latch - This type of door lock includes a lockable
internal handle which prevents someone reaching in and opening the door. The
door can be opened from the outside only through a key-in outside cylinder.
These kinds of door locks are mainly used for external entry doors for security
reasons. The door lock should be used for outward opening doors and suit doors
between 35mm and 60mm thick. Cylinder rim locks are commonly supplied with either
a 40mm or 60mm backset which is the measurement from the edge of the door to
the centre of the keyhole
Lever Rim Locks - These door locks can be operated either
by way of rim latch where operation is by a knob from either side but the side
bolt operation is from the inside only. The other type of door lock is where
the deadbolt is operated by a key from either side of the door and the latchbolt
withdrawn by a knob from either side.

Mortice Locks
Mortice door locks are recessed into the door edge and are operated by keys
or lever handles from either side. Depending upon application, locks with different
backsets are available. The backset is the measurement from the edge of the
door to the centre of the keyhole of the door lock. There is also one way or
two way action locks. One way action door locks are for use with lever handles
only, as the handle can be turned in the downward position only. Two way door
locks are for use with knob furniture, as the knob can be rotated in both directions.
Mortice Locks which include
Horizontal
Motice locks: The horizontal mortice door lock has a two way action
suitable for knobs or sprung lever handles. The latchbolt can be withdrawn by
a knob or sprung lever handle from either side. Locking is via keys supplied
and security can be determined by the number of levers in the door lock. This
ranges from 2 or 3 to 5 levers or more. Higher the lever number, greater is
the security. The 5 & 3 lever mortice door locks are suitable for doors
up to 58mm thick when using 8mm thick furniture plates.
Bathroom door locks: The deadbolt for the Bathroom door lock
can be unlocked or locked by separate turn and release on the door handle from
the inside, while the latchbolt can be withdrawn by the door handle from either
side.

Euro profile & Oval Profile cylinder locks
Cylinder door locks can be used where security is of prime importance and suited
for those who prefer a keyed entry. These door locks are available as single
keyed, double keyed or a turn & key system as shown below. One must consider
the door thickness and the door handle backplate depth before selecting any
one cylinder door lock for fitting. The door locks should be fitted along with
euro or oval profile cylinder door lock cases. The locks are fitted through
the doors passing through the cylinder lock cases, so care must be taken while
selecting the door lock cases to have the shape of the keyhole similar to the
shape of the cylinder door lock. The same case is applicable if a door handle
is being used on any side. The keyhole must be suited to accommodate the chosen
profile door lock.
